Gnarly tricks: Skate Park Leagues is hosting a competition at the Port Campbell Skatepark this weekend.

Locals will battle it out in skate, scoot and BMX disciplines, with winners accumulating points towards the Victorian Western Regional SPL Ladder.

The Victoria League makes up one part of the YMCA Action Sports’ national competition series with events happening in Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, Northern Territory, Western Australia and New South Wales.

The competition welcomes those of all ages and abilities to have a go.

Athletes can compete to be crowned the winner of not only Port Campbell but also the Victorian Western Regional Series.

The SPL is a grass-roots competition series focused on fun and inclusion, well suited for first time competitors and a platform for skilled locals to showcase their talents.

Prizes are raffled off throughout the day so everyone has a chance to join in on the fun.

SPL competitions give the community the opportunity to come together, watch and support local talent, get involved and cheer on their own.

YMCA, in conjunction with the Skate Australia, Cycling Australia, Victorian Skateboarding Association (VSA) and participating Local Government Areas, typically facilitate the 100 SPL events a year that make up the Australian SPL.

This makes SPL the biggest and most established grass roots skateboard, scoot and BMX series in Australia.

“Skate Park Leagues give people of all walks of life the opportunity to come together and use the council’s facility in a positive and meaningful way,” manager of YMCA action sports Alice Hogan said.

“The inclusion and support we see at each event is amazing and a testament to the skate park communities.”

Coastal Ward Councillor Jamie Vogels said the event is a safe, fun, and inclusive activity for young people.

“Come along and hang out with like-minded people and help each other with their techniques,” he said.

“It’s an opportunity for local skaters to practice their skills, socialise, and support each other's progress.

“You can register on the day. There will be one hour scheduled for competitors to register before the competitions.”

The Port Campbell round has been brought to life through a partnership between Corangamite Shire, YMCA Action Sports, Victorian Skateboarding Association (VSA), AusCycling and Skate Australia.

The competition will be held at the Port Campbell Skatepark – 52 Lord Street - between 11am and 4pm.
