Simpson pilot program set to launch
A NEW pilot program will start in Simpson this month giving new residents a chance to practice conversational English.
Simpson and District Community Centre coordinator Debra Smith said the pilot project has been dubbed ‘Belong: Unlocking the Potential of our Diverse Community.
“The program started last August as Conversational English, which we have been running with little or no funding resources,” she said.
“Amanda Poustie approached the centre to see if we knew of anything running or could help set something up as she had noticed a big increase in the number of migrant workers in the area with little or no English speaking skills.
“After some research our program launched, led by Amanda and a group of amazing volunteers, with six people attending the first session.
“We quickly found out that the need is far more reaching than English skills, so we have touched on first aid and driving skills and will continue to expand the program while the need is there.”
It is hoped to incorporate driving skills and water safety over the coming 12 months.
Mrs Smith said there was about 12 regulars who attend the sessions when they can.
She said the program is outreaching to Timboon from late May, where numbers are expected to at least double.
The project is a collaboration between Cultura and Simpson and District Community Centre, under the auspices of the Department of Families Fairness and Housing Victoria.
“Cultura has come on board as they are very interested in the program and have a history of delivering culturally appropriate programs to migrant workers in large employers like ALC and Midfield,” Mrs Smith said.
“Working with small employers based across a large area is a new challenge for them.
“They have offered training for the facilitators and some funding to support the program.
“Both organisations will benefit from partnership with expanded networks and links.”
The pilot project will officially launch on May 9 at the Simpson and District Public Hall between 10.30am and 11.30am.
The morning will include the official unveiling of the pilot project, brief presentations on objectives of the project, looking at the history of migration in the Corangamite region and networking opportunities.
Those wishing to attend are asked to RSVP to the Simpson and District Community Centre on 5594 3448 or email office@simpsondcc.com.au by May 4.
