Thrills and spills at season opener
THERE was action aplenty at Heytesbury Stockfeeds Simpson Speedway last weekend, with three drivers taken to hospital following major incidents.
Simpson’s season-opener on Saturday proved a challenging one for drivers and their teams, with earlier rain resulting in a softer clay track for the early heat races.
The junior formula 500s again provided plenty of entertainment for the crowd, with Cobden’s Rusty Ponting taking the chequered flag ahead of Paddy Lewis in second and Cody Malley third.
In the earlier heats, Timboon’s Tyler Walters got sideways coming out of turn two, with his car landing hard on its side.
The crash crew took extra precaution and Walters was transferred to Warrnambool hospital where he reportedly watched the junior final from his hospital bed.
The wingless sprints series saw eight heats on the race program, with barely any major issues.
In the 30-lap feature, Travis Millar took the chequered flag, ahead of Luke Weel, with Angus Hollis rounding up the top three.
The Vic title of the Formula 500s is yet to be decided after a major crash in lap one of the final saw officials call an end to the night.
Colac driver Caleb Langdon and Warrnambool’s Max Owen were both taken to hospital after both cars went hard into the wall.
A decision is yet to be announced as to when the Victorian Championship will be re-run.
Action will return to the Heytesbury Stockfeeds Simpson Speedway on Friday, December 27 for the opening round of the F500 Speedweek.
