Tough final for Mortlake White

DESPITE their best efforts, Mortlake White was unable to defeat a strong City Memorial in last Saturday’s grand final bowls match.

White travelled to Timboon Bowling Club to chase finals glory.

Mortlake held its own and kept in lockstep for the first third of the match, however, mid-way through City began to inch away.

By the ‘premiership quarter’ the pressure was too much and in the end City Memorial took the win, 71-48.

Despite the loss, all players should be proud of their achievements this season.

Richard Draffen lost to Garry Davey 3-30, Paul Delaney defeated Ken Bell 31-14 and Colin Inverarity lost to Steph Hunt 14-27.

In Club Championships, the second semi-final saw Dean McKenzie and John Tanner take on Peter Summerhayes and Scott Pierce.

The match began with Dean and John taking an early lead, but Scott and Peter continued to creep back and eventually took the win.

They then faced Colin Goldsworthy and Darren Grant in the final.

Colin and Darren got off to a good start but Scott and Peter kept them on their toes, battling all the way.

Scott and Peter held the lead, briefly, before Darren and Colin dropped the hammer and showed why they are four-time mens’ pairs champions (now five).

Congratulations to Darren and Colin and well done to runners-up Scott and Peter.

In the women’s final, Gert MacDonald and Dianne Robertson played Sandra Richie and Glenice Kenna.

Gert and Dianne got off to a strong start but Sandra and Glenice began to make ground towards the end.

Congratulations to the 2024/25 women’s pairs champions, Gert MacDonald and Dianne Robertson.

Well done to runners-up Sandra Richie and Glenice Kenna.

The next club event will be mixed pairs.

The ladies held their invitation fours tournament at Mortlake last Friday.

Sixteen teams from all around the district (and locally) enjoyed a day of bowls in perfect weather, playing four games of eight ends.

By the third game there were three undefeated teams and one side with two wins and a draw.

With a total of 94 points, congratulations to Cobden team comprising Loreigh Andrews, Doreen Coverdale, Clare Reynolds and Ann Scott on their win.

The runners-up on 82 points were Mary Graham, Karen Gleeson, Joan Curow and Glenda Richie from the City/Lake Bolac side.

The ‘luckiest team award’ which went to the side that had an enjoyable, social day, went to the Colac team of Marj, Sandra, Tracey and Ruth.

They were gifted a handmade shortbread bowls biscuit courtesy of Mortlake member, Ann Johnson.
