Winter was cold, but dry this year

THE end of winter proved chilly and windy, but failed to deliver on the rainfall front.

Across winter, a total of 172.1mm fell over Cobden and surrounds.

Cobden experienced rainfall below the long-term average throughout June, with the first half of 2024 proving to be drier than usual.

There was just 43.8mm of rain recorded over the town throughout the month, with the figure falling below the long-term monthly average of 82.3mm.

The highest daily rainfall was recorded on June 29, with 13.8mm hitting the ground.

The result was in stark contrast to June last year, when a 117mm result was recorded, with a highest daily rainfall of 25mm, to make the month the wettest of the year.

The June result for 2024 brought the total rain tally over Cobden to 201.2mm at the half way point of the year, far below the long-term average 360.1mm over the same period.

Rain was a welcome sight for farmers in July after a dry first six months of the year.

Across Cobden and surrounds, 91.9mm of rain hit the ground over Cobden for the month.

The figure was only slightly behind the long-term average for the month at 92.4mm.

While marginally behind the long-term average, last month’s tally was well above last year’s figure of just 47mm.

The highest daily rainfall figure was experienced on July 26, which saw 24.2mm fall in the 24-hour period – more than a quarter of the month’s rainfall total.

August proved to be the driest month of the season with just 36.4mm, well below the long-term average of 101.4mm.

The highest daily rainfall total was 6mm which fell on August 24.

So far to date this year, a total of 330.3mm has fallen over Cobden and surrounds.
